Abstract
Background and Objective: The present study aimed to compare cognitive emotion regulation, social adjustment, and cognitive distortions between users of depressant and stimulant drugs and normal individuals.
Methodology: The statistical population comprised 180 individuals who visited drug rehabilitation centers in Ahvaz during Bahman and Esfand 1403 (2024/2025). Participants were selected from these centers using convenience sampling. All participants were informed about the study’s goals, and their participation was entirely voluntary. Informed consent was obtained from all individuals, and the principles of confidentiality and anonymity were observed throughout the research process. The research design was causal-comparative. Instruments included the Granefsky et al. (2001) Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the Bell Social Adjustment Scale (1997), and a researcher-made questionnaire for Beck’s Cognitive Distortions.
Findings: Data analysis was performed using SPSS software. Significant statistical differences were found in cognitive distortions and negative emotion regulation among the measured groups (𝐹= 5.503, 𝑃<0.001(. However, no significant statistical difference was observed in the social adjustment across the three groups. Furthermore, significant differences existed in cognitive distortions among the measured groups..
Conclusion: The findings revealed significant variations in emotion regulation and cognitive distortions among the study groups, although no significant statistical difference was observed in social adjustment. Therefore, given the identified cognitive differences, it is recommended that educational booklets be designed to specifically focus on raising family awareness regarding emotion regulation and coping with cognitive distortions, thereby facilitating the necessary grounds for the effective reintegration and participation of these individuals in society.
